Why Creative people need discipline?
Creative people and discipline?
It seems like a paradox.
But when we look to it closely we will discover a concrete relation.
Creative minds are fertile minds. Truly creative artists and managers keep producing ideas on the go. As if there is an idea machine in their head which converts every stimulus into ideas.
As a result, they have more ideas spinning in their heads then they can execute.
Sometimes a new idea is so exciting that they keep ruminating about it and feel happy about it. The boundary between a concept and its actualisation is often blurred.
That’s why creative people need discipline. They need to prioritize the ideas they want to execute. And then they need to allocate time to bring forth those ideas in reality.
Execution of ideas is often not as exciting as creating new ideas. Many creatives think execution is not the same level of activity as ideation is. This mind block becomes a real barrier in producing results.
That’s why it becomes important to have a balance between the ideation and execution time.
A creative genius is known by the work he produces..
A novel, painting or a wonderful business model in our head doesn’t exist in the world.
It’s like a seed in a plastic pouch!
So let us monitor how we are consuming our time and energy on a day to day basis. That will help us realise our true potential as creative thinkers and doers.

Article is really good and makes surface for discussion on “how creative people should be on work”. I am agreed that for best results we should be disciplined while execution of ideas but when it comes idea generation we should not restrict creative people to discipline otherwise it will make them conscious and will develop a limitation circle in mind and will not be able to think beyond this……….
We should always remember M.F. Hussain, society demanded discipline which made him to think to l’ve his ‘KARMBHUMI’.
creative mind is the most efficient machine till date to convert informations into great ideas but only when it is not conscious.

Thanks Varun,
here we are talking about the discipline coming from the artist himself. Its about managing the creative efforts and energy.
You are bang on as far as ideation is concerned.

When we talk about discipline within a creative person then creativity get controlled by some sort of thought of discipline. In any controlled environment the creative ideas can’t be effective, it can only be a programmed idea.

The Vedas, Rig-veda,Samveda,Yajurveda,Atharvaveda,and Ayurveda; were not just ideations, they were pure practical aspects on living life in Prithvi or Dhara. Rishis who created such wonderous texts were full of Discipline,Dedication,Devotion,Dynamism,Dexterity(Expertise in Subject Written) that all their work has stood the test of time.
Besides these, Brahmanyakas,Upanishads,Udgiths, Havan Mantras, and Festival rituals were all made to make the mankind a logical living being. Now our kids hardly know any of the above names thanks to the influence of the “Little Idiot-Box” or Television’s Serials and Cartoon Network which has made the modern-day children glued to the television, and hardly use their brains for creative pursuits or even book-reading.
Today’s kids have lesser concentration on the task, with a flickering mind and wavering interests on studies;but watch with total attentiveness programmes like:– Ben10, Power-Rangers,Monster Mania (Tv cartoons),etc. There are some kids who make it to “Lil Champs—Zara Nach Ke Dikha” and “Boogie Woogie”, these types have the ability, zest and guts to succeed through a self-punishing regimen of hardwork with no compromise on time-wasting or cartooning before the TV. They prefer to be seen on TV rather than waste time watching TV for long hours.
All creativity needs a mission of dedicated hardwork!
